How to Update Joomla to the Latest Version

One of the most important factors to keep your site is to update Joomla to its latest version. Any dynamic website faces the constant risk of security issues, spamming, information theft and such. When you don't update Joomla site then your site becomes more vulnerable to these attacks.

The reason why new versions of Joomla is released every now and then is to guard your site against these security vulnerabilities. Joomla developers help fix errors within the code and security issues, which is why it's important to update Joomla to the latest version the moment you know about it.

One reason why you should immediately update Joomla is that the Joomla project provides support for only a particular span of time. The two types of support are Short Term Support (STS) and Long Term Support (LTS). You can know more about the Joomla support cycle here.

Before You Update Joomla

Whenever you make any changes to your site, not just when you update Joomla, there are a few things to keep in mind. For instance, you should always back up your Joomla site. There are three ways you can backup your Joomla site.

1. Back up your site.

  • Use FTP/SSH or phpMyAdmin to create a manual back up your files.
  • Back up from the hosting panel of your site.
  • The backend of Akeeba also helps back up your site completely.

2. Build a development site

The development site you create is a copy of your main site. You can test all the updates of Joomla as well as all the updates for Joomla extensions and templates. That way you can test drive the updates before deploying them on your main site.

3. Follow official Joomla Twitter

Keep up to date with all the Joomla news to know what the next update is going to bring for you. They also tweet about bug issues in the Joomla version which could be super useful.

4. Be part of the bug squad.

This is pretty self-explanatory. You get to test the newest updates before they are released and find bug issues. Join the bug squad and try out the new version before others.

Update Joomla to Latest Version

Step 1. Go to the backend of your site & navigate to Components>Joomla! Update. When an option to update Joomla is available, the backend will notify it.

Step 2. Click on the option to install update.

There are three methods of Joomla updates which include:

  • Write files directly
  • Hybrid (use FTP only if needed)
  • Write files using FTP
The "write files directly" is the best option when it comes to choosing the installation method.

When the update is in progress, it should look like the following image.

Finally, when you update Joomla to the latest version, the panel shows that there are no updates to be installed.

Updating Joomla from 2.5 to Joomla 3x requires a thorough checking of whether your plugins are compatible with the latest version. Some of you might have modified files which are not recommended at all. That's because when you update Joomla, you overwrite these files causing your site to malfunction in places.

To check whether all your extensions are updated, navigate to Extensions > Extension Manager. Update all the extensions before you update Joomla. After that update Joomla as shown above.

Note: Joomla 1.5 is highly outdated and you might require an extension to get the update.
